Stabat Mater by John Browne (c.1426-1498)

Considered by many to be the crowning glory of the Eton Choirbook, this is a six-voice work focussing on the grief of the Virgin Mary at the Crucifixion.  It uses the alternation between reduced-voice and full choir sections typical of English choral music of the period:  there is constant movement within each voice part, even when the full choir is in full cry, so at every listening there seems to be something new to hear.

The work is too long to upload in its entirety, so here we have the first five minutes:  the end of the work is in the next podcast.  Soloists: Josie Walledge (soprano); Rachel Howells and Tim Thorp (alto); Neville Gibbings and Peter Beamish (tenor), Chris Droop and Robert Martin (bass).  Recorded live at a concert in Buckfast Abbey on 17 March 2012.  Voces, conducted by Martyn Warren.
